I'M SICK. POOR ME. *BUT THIS IS IMPORTANT!*

I feel horrible. I got home from Germany on Thursday w/ acute bronchitis.
Yep, home, doctor, bed.
I told my sister just a few minutes ago that I had to write this blog post right now
even while I'm feeling icky because it's so important.
No pictures to attach - I don't feel well enough to search my photos
for ones that would work. So, this time you just get my words.

Here's my question.
What the heck is going on people??
When did we stop showing our love, our gratitude, our blessings,
when did we stop care giving, when did we stop saying thank you,
making our family more important than our job, our gym, our phone, our hobbies??
And, of course, my rant comes from a couple of things that have happened recently.
...And running with it on the phone with Joan!

There are many qualities of etiquette that have changed over the last 45 years when I was a teen and taking etiquette classes. Things that have changed from 25 years ago when I was raising my boys and passing on what I believed in from my upbringing.
But, there are some things that should never change. #Never

We have become so busy, I think, that we've lost sight of what's important.
When we get God first, family second and job third out of order, we quickly begin the snowball that becomes the size of Frosty; rolling rolling rolling.
So busy, busy, busy. No time to think about anything but work.
Too tired to think about anything but work.

There's many examples and they don't all include work, but a lot do.
I'm 61 this year and didn't realize my age to the extent I do now, not until I saw
a particular wedding picture that had my two daughter-in-laws being hugged from the side by me, their mother-in-law. Oh, how I hate that term. The photo showed me looking like I look to everyone but me. In reality, I'm 61 years old. #61 And, I have the etiquette standards of someone "old".
So be it. I'm old. I look old in the wedding picture. So embarrassing when you have no idea you look old. But, I have etiquette values that I try (sometimes unsuccessfully) to hold as a standard in the way I live my life. And, those values are a good thing.

Putting God first has never been an issue. My problem has been not letting my physical adventures get in the way of keeping my family first. Not really an issue for me unless it involves getting a birthday present or Christmas presents in the mail on time!

When you are the one that is aware and believes in certain points of etiquette and those around you don't practice the same, it can be very hard not to be in a state of disappointment. That's where prayer saves my life. Well, most times. Sometimes one just can't help but be in a state of disappointment for a few moments.

So, what are those points of etiquette that I think are so vitally important and that have, for the most part, been pushed to the wayside?

1. If you receive a card or handwritten letter in the mail, you need to acknowledge that. A simple text message thanking the sender is adequate according to the Etiquette Book of Jan (though I seriously abhor text messaging as a way of communication). It works here and let's the sender know that it not only arrived, but that you appreciate the time it took the sender to "think of you".

2. If you receive a package in the mail - a birthday present, Christmas presents, a "just because" present, any "gift" - you simply must acknowledge receipt of it along with a heartfelt thank you. It's so hard in this day and age to find time for extras (isn't that basically what this post is about??) that getting a present put in the mail is a bit of a chore. All of the time involved, the $$...it's a sincere act of love. And, it deserves a thank you. It deserves more than a text message. Try a phone call, an email, a written note. Do something (but, please don't send a text).

3. After God, make sure you're putting your family first. That begins with you and your partner, your children and your extended family. And, may I say something here that will no doubt make some of you roll your eyes??

When you, my child, "fly the coop" and start becoming your own person and then roll into being your own person? Don't forget your parents. Don't forget your mom. God made you whom you are through the efforts of your parents. And, speaking as a mom, I am still your mom. And, though no longer #1 in your life, I'm your biggest supporter, your biggest fan and, even if you've forgotten, your first love. So, just because you're now an adult, don't make the mistake of cutting your mom/your parents out of your life. Seriously? Not going to be around forever and speaking from experience, don't waste the time you have now to get to know me/us as people, not just as your parents. We're more awesome than you even realize. But to know that, you have to get to know us. (Do you know your mom's favorite dessert? Her favorite movie? Her favorite scripture? Her favorite outside pastime? Stories of great adventure and fun from her past? Her college days? Etc., etc., etc......)

So, there, I've said all I came to say. Maybe I said too much. But, I stand by what I said.
I hope I said it clearly enough that it makes sense.
I would love your feedback. Disagreement said in a kind way is welcome.
The End.

Be blessed. Be a blessing.

BOY HOWDY, DID IT RAIN ON BRAT!!

Yes, it rained on Brat......like a wedding SHOWER!
And, I went to it.
You wouldn't think driving five hours to the Ft. Worth area
would be that big of a deal for me.
But, you must remember that I am an old woman.
A very, very old woman, and that I made a huge mistake
in my drive north....I drove up I-35.
For you that know me, you know that I.DO.NOT.DRIVE.ON.THE.INTERSTATE.

I found myself 'talking' to the other drivers, using gestures (nothing nasty), and shaking my head most of the time.
It's the semi's.
Oh, yeah, S-E-M-I.'s.
You know the one's I'm talking about...
"Breaker....Breaker....
I'm going to pass you
now that we're approaching a hill"
"Breaker....Breaker....
This is Black Roots; can girls play?"
And, you (that'd be ME) average 40 mph a-l-l-l-l-l-l-l
the way to Euless, Texas.
Oh, my gosh, I wanted to smack someone.
(And, if you drive a semi, love someone that drives a semi, and this offends you,
just play Pass Another Semi on a Hill - you'll feel vindicated)

Okay, enough about me for a moment.
.....The shower for Brat was delightful.
The food looked amazing.
The house was beautiful.
And, it was apparent that all had a fabulous time.
This is the sign that greeted us as we walked up
to the house. When I saw it, I KNEW we were
going to have some fun!
These lovely girls met me at the door.
That's Brat, second from the left - isn't she pretty?
Oh, yeah, here I am trying out some layers
in Photoshop Elements 9 that I've just purchased.
This was an experiment and took me an entire
day, therefore, it's included.
This is a picture of the fruit that was served.
It tasted better than it looks.
THIS is a really good cupcake. Oh, my.

The room was filled with friends, family and
sorority sisters of Brat's.
Will's mom (on the right) came from Ohio
(I know) and though I didn't get but a minute
to talk to her, I hope to get to know her better
at the wedding. Brat says she's delightful.
(Just like my DIL says about me)
"Oh!!" I think Brat just opened
something that really excited
Hostess Heather!

It's embarrassing how bad my memory is -
at the shower I introduced myself to the
same woman twice. Yeah.
But, for some reason, I remember who is in
this picture with Will's mom -
it's Jessica (in the middle)
(oh, dear, it could be "Jamie" now that
I'm writing it. SEE?? It's so embarrassing:)
and Will's aunt.
TaDah!!

Now, for gift opening and, though,
I'm really not a selfish person,
I just really want to share the card
and gifts I gave her.
WELL??? It's my blog.
(Oh, hush, I'm just being sarcastic.)

Okay, after 45minutes  of trying to get this to right justify,
I give up and wouldn't ya know,
it right justifies. I can honestly say that I
hate blogger. The envelope I made is above.

This is the back of the envelope.

The card. I loved being back in my studio!

All eyes were on Brat as she opened all of her wonderful gifts!

Brat's shower really did give me the excuse
I needed to clear off a 4" square of work space to make a wall hanging for her and Will.

It wasn't on her registry so I knew I'd surprise her!
This will be so handy on those
away games on the bus.

There's always that one gift
at every shower.....

This also wasn't on her registry,
this canister set, and Brat
was so excited to receive it.
If I could just remember who gifted it.

Bed Bath and Beyond was a
very successful registry store.
Brat received so many great
gifts from that store.

Isn't this so cool?
I wonder if she'll give it to me
for my birthday?

I want to introduce you to an amazing
young lady - Jackie. She was one of
Brat's best friends (and remains so)
in college and was in a horrific
automobile accident that left her
in a coma for a very long time.
She came out of her coma and Brat
and everyone that loved her were
overjoyed! No one knows if she
knows who you are when you talk to
her, but after meeting this amazing
young woman, I know that she does.
Jackie is an honorary bridesmaid in
Brat's wedding and I think that's very
special, just like Jackie.

Y'all know what retail therapy is, right?
After two days in a row on I-35
(I didn't mean to take I-35 home, I just somehow ended up
on it. True story.)
I decided I needed some.
I stopped at my favorite shop in
Llano, Texas, and spent $75.00.
I picked up some wonderful things.
Unfortunately, it didn't help.
*sigh*

But, you know what did make me smile
after two days on I-35?? Coming home to
all of this mail. It's all donations, monetary
and art supplies, for kids that need our
love and something to take their minds
off of their problems - hopefully in JOPLIN.

My other 'little girl', Skyler, and I are
planning a "mission" trip the first part of
July - God's plan and we're so excited!

And, btw?? I'm still smiling.

And, though it's not my usual sign-off,
I LOVE YOU, BRAT

                MOM2

one more thing - if the pictures aren't spaced correctly with their text, I apologize, but I'm not re-opening this post. it's 8:45 P.M. and I'm pooped! I hope you've enjoyed reading about Brat's lovely shower.
Good Night! lol
OKAY, I PEEKED..................DID I MENTION THAT I HATE BLOGGER??
I NEED SOMEONE TO SMACK.
"Oh, Franki-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e"

TEAM TINA IS FIERCE!!!

When my dear, sweet friend, Tina Wright, was diagnosed with colon cancer a few weeks ago (you can read more about TEAM TINA and Tina's fight by scrolling down and reading the first post about Tina's cancer) I knew that I wanted to do something to make her feel the love of the artist community that she was a part of and that she loves. That's when TEAM TINA was formed and our first outpouring of love was organized.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that my call out for tags for a "tag gate" for Tina would produce such an outpouring of love. I have been humbled by the generosity and time that I know went into each and every tag that has been received.
I got home from my trip to Michigan and when I saw the pile of TEAM TINA mail I was filled with joy! I couldn't believe it! So many envelopes! I couldn't wait to open them all!!
It took a few days before I could get to the mail (*life got in the way*) but when I did, I just sat here in my bedroom sitting area with the envelopes piled on the floor to my right and as I opened each one I was again humbled by the notes of love that I received.
Thank you, dear ones, for your kind words. And, some of you made me a tag or enclosed a small gift. I have kept every note, every tag and gift, every sweet card...........I treasure them all.
.
But, the most wonderful thing was opening the envelopes and seeing the gorgeous tags y'all made for Tina! Every envelope I opened, I would think to myself, "Oh, my gosh, I need to email *this woman* and tell her how much I love her tag!!!". And, then I'd think, okay, I'll do that at the end of opening all of these envelopes.
Well, let me tell ya - I just don't have the time to email EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU to tell you how wonderful your tags are - I'll just have to tell you here.

Honestly, and please excuse me if I sound like a broken record, y'all have touched me by the outpouring of love and support you are showing Tina through your creations. This project is going to knock her socks off!
And, I must tell you that my heart was pierced each time I would open a tag made by an artist that doesn't know Tina, but wanted to bless her. Wow.
(click on the pictures to enlarge and see the details of the tags!)
What a blessing y'all are to a woman fighting for her life.
A woman that is courageous through her faith in the Lord, is supported by those praying for her, and is supported by outpourings of love such as this TEAM TINA project.
Thank you. Thank you so much.
And, if you didn't know about this project and want to be a part of it, you still have time because I won't be traveling to Tina's until November. She and I have talked and are planning on the Tank and I making the trip the first part of November, so if you want, scroll back to the first post about Tina and simply follow the directions. There is plenty of room for a tag from you!

Okay, let me tell you - I looked in every junk shop between here and Michigan for the rusty old gate that I wanted for this project. No such gate to be found. Now, we have one here at the ranch, but it keeps the goats penned, so I had to think of something else..........I went to a salvage company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and I bought a vintage chippy white Victorian window. Oh, my gosh, it is so cool.
I'm going to break out all of the glass and attach a sheet of (pale pink) wire on which to hang the tags. It's going to be so amazing when I put your tags on it.............Now, give me a week or two to get this done and when it's all put together and pretty, I'll blog about it! Aren't you excited???
This project is just so cool and whether you know it or not, you're a vessel of God and that is the coolest thing to me!

XOXO, Jan
P.S. TEAM TINA ISN'T FINISHED YET!
.I'VE GOT ANOTHER PROJECT UP MY GLITTERED SLEEVE AND
.I'LL BE TELLING YOU ABOUT IT IN A WHILE.....
.STAY TUNED, YOU SWEET, SWEET ARTISTS!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME AND PRESENTS FOR YOU!

I'll be 56 on September 1st. Or, you can think like I do - my 24th birthday is September 1st because I look just like Barbie. Either way, I'M HAVING A BIRTHDAY!
And, what could be better than to gift y'all??!! So, keep reading and you'll see just how you can be the one to receive gifts on MY birthday! This is just so much stinkin' fun!
Oh, my gosh, I almost forgot! The reason you're getting two gifts is because I'm also celebrating the fact that I have OVER 100 FOLLOWERS! I feel like a celebrity. One hundred followers is, to me, a really big deal. I'll probably keel over if I ever get over 200 - that would be rad!

The first lovely gift is a very cool vintage brooch that I bought at an estate sale. In the photo it looks about as big as my bum, but it's really just regular size - about 2 1/2 inches across, I think. It's simply gorgeous - not a stone missing. Just think of what you could use this on!
AND, you will also receive the gift of a vintage evening purse! It's made of black velvet and has intricate designs sewn on both sides with seed beads. It's absolutely fabulous! I bought it at an estate sale, also. I bought both the vintage brooch and the vintage evening bag especially for this giftaway. I wanted two very special gifts for you.
See how it opens? Very cool. It opens with some kind of spring thingy that bends in the middle so it's really easy to get into. The lining of the evening bag is black satin. It's just beautiful!
Now, this giftaway is not only for having over 100 followers, it's for my birthday so that I can gift you, my readers.
And, I'll be adding a lot of extras to this giftaway to make it REALLY special!!

I've given so much thought as to how I wanted to do this.....did I want to just take comments as entries since these are being specially gifted to you? Or did I want to have the odds tilt towards the faithful readers that have stuck with me over time?

Let's see what I decided as you read...
rules of the giftaway:

1. Leave a glowing (LOL) comment = ONE ENTRY

2. If you are already a follower of my blog = TWO MORE ENTRIES
That's right - you get two more entries if you're already a follower of my blog.

3. If you sign up TODAY to follow my blog (see the right column of my blog) = ONE
MORE ENTRY

4. If you already follow me on Facebook = TWO MORE ENTRIES
That's right - you get two more entries if you're already a follower of me on fb.

5. If you sign up TODAY to follow me on Facebook (see the right column of my
blog) = ONE MORE ENTRY

6. If you leave an enticing post on YOUR blog about this giftaway = TWO MORE
ENTRIES.
That's right, sweet ones, two more entries.
(BE SURE AND LEAVE YOUR BLOG ADDRESS SO I CAN VISIT IT AND SEE YOUR
ENTICING POST:)
.
7. If you send me a very nice birthday present you automatically win. hahaha
(JUST KIDDING!!)

Okay, that's it, girls! I hope you have as much fun reaching for the gifts as I have had creating this giftaway!
REMEMBER TO LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU QUALIFY FOR WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR COMMENT.
AND, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, LEAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS!

Thanks so much everyone for entering! You know what I always say, the more the merrier - that's what makes a great birthday party!!

XOXO, Jan

A LATE THANK YOU IS BETTER THAN NO THANK YOU AT ALL.

What I'm talking about is a "BLOG thank you". I've done the personal thank yous and I keep thinking about doing the blog thank yous and, FINALLY, I'm getting them posted! Whew. It's like a ton of bricks have been lifted off my............what is it? shoulders? head? back? bum? I don't remember the right word, but you know what I mean.

I'm sure I'm not alone in celebrating my "half birthday". Now, in my family and actually, when I think about it, among my friends, I do seem to be the only one who does celebrate their half birthday - you know, that day six months after your actual birthday and six months before your next one - your half birthday.

I love celebrating it. I get presents.
Sometimes I get half of a present - we all have those kind of friends. LOL
And sometimes I get the most wonderful presents I simply must blog about them even if I'm a month late! My half birthday is on March 1st.
(If you have a calendar, you might want to make note of that and see if you can beat what you're about to see. hahaha. Oh, I think you should! ROTF)
My sweet friend, Mija (
fairemaidenmija@yahoo.com) sent me the most amazing large mailer stuffed full of wonderful ephemera! I was so surprised! Not that she sent it (she is so, so giving), but that she would celebrate my half birthday with me! I met her in person at the Art n Soul retreat in Portland a few years ago after meeting online. We hit it off immediately - she is a hoot, I adore her, and I'm so blessed that we are friends.

Here's what she sent to me!:
I adore this box. Look at those precious girls - they melt my heart.
Wonderful pages from vintage books. Mmmmmmmm.
I thought these stamps were really cool.
Everything she sent me was wonderful. Thank you, Mija, my dear friend. I love you.

And just when I think it's all over and life is rockin' along as usual, my precious friend, Tina, knocks my socks off with a half birthday present that is nothing short of glorious.
Her presentation was precious, she included lots of "confetti" and a darling accordion card that she made, all that lead up to her gift.

She is an amazing artist and an even better friend. She used her gift of soldering to make me a necklace that was all about me. She covered everything - my Barbie age of 24, the fact that I live a Christian life, and as one friend put it just last night when I wore the necklace to a party, the necklace is so me because it's so eclectic. I'll accept that! LOL
Check this out!:
The wee bitty ceramic doll from Germany is the center piece. Tina put her in a matchbox, collaged the inside of the box and then soldered the glass to the front. Isn't it awesome???
My favorite part of the right side of the necklace is, of course, the arm. It's the piece that gets the most comments! And, it rocks!!
See the tube below? It has a piece of long paper in it among the glitter that says, "the Christian life". It's very special to me.
So is the game piece that shows my Barbie age of 24. A true friend recognizes my Barbie age.
That's Tina.
And here's a picture (a rather large one! LOL) of the clasp. I love the heart way up there by the clasp. I feel like it represents her heart and my heart joined in friendship.
Oh, my gosh, that sounds so sappy!
Well, it may sound sappy, but it's what I think!
Tina and I met online. We hit it off right away and have become good friends.
She and her husband have ridden their Harley's to the ranch while on a road trip and we had such a good time at lunch. It was our first "face to face" meeting but you would have never known it! We talked like there was no tomorrow. LOL
And, then last year we got to experience the Paper Cowgirl retreat together. (And, we're looking forward to being together during it again this June. YOU should try and come - it's a HOOT!)
Needless to say, she's a winner. A dear friend and someone I simply adore.
Both of these friends, Mija and Tina, made my half birthday so special.
They make every day special in my thoughts, though, not just that one day. I think of both of them often, pray for them always, and love them dearly.
And, you, my sweet readers, well, you know how much I adore y'all.
You also make my day EVERY day!
XOXO,
. . .Jan
